What is it like having both young children and large parrots in your home?
Answer:
Well my birds are not exceptionally large, the largest right now is a Blue Fronted Amazon, and my kids are a bit older now, youngest being 9. But I have had the bird for almost 20 years and have fostered larger birds as well while the kids were smaller. I also have 2 toddlers that visit on a frequent basis.
So here is what I did. Supervision is the first line of defense in any animal child interaction. When they were not directly supervised they were always seperated. When my youngest was a baby the birds had thier own room in the house and we gated the door so the baby could not get in there.
This is was no longer an option when we moved into a smaller home. Then I put the birds in a corner of the livingroom and took a interior house door and laid it on it's side to make a half wall to keep the kids away from the birds.
I tell the kids that the birds bite and I tell the little ones who don't live here everytime they come to make sure they don't forget. With my own kids I just made sure to remind them whenever they got even close to the cages. The amazon doesn't like anyone except me and my oldest son, so I have to remind the adults not to walk too close to the cage all the time as well.
I would wait until the kids were asleep to give the birds thier out of cage time.
If you are vigilant and careful it works out fine. I have even had daycares bring the kids here to see al the animals and again just supervising, educating, and taking basic safety precautions works fine.
